Narcissist Vs Sociopath: 6 differences in tone and style

Let’s contrast narcissist and sociopath (tonally)

Narcissist Vs Sociopath is a lighter way to look at these two dangerous profiles. They share enormous comorbidity but are also structurally distinct in terms of emotionality, inner life, motivation and tone.

Personality disorders (ASD, BPD, NPD etc.) overlap in many ways and it can be confusing to know clearly which is which. Every sociopath is a narcissist for example, but not every narcissist is a sociopath. ASD and narcissism share a striking lack of empathy, something rare and highly damaging to their environment. BPD and NPD also share much, outwardly, in terms of poor boundaries, self-importance, etc. It is vital to see clearly the differences between BPD, Narcissism and ASD to develop better coping mechanisms, manage expectations, make better decisions.

But explaining only goes so far. Cognitively, we learn often more, deeper knowledge, from experiences, or from seeing/hearing “the real thing” rather than reading about it. Our frontal lobe only goes so far, actually. Often times, if we want to remember something deeper, with better recall, we need to have some emotional (or here tonal) connection to it. Narcissist Vs Sociopath is not just a pub-quiz “how to spot” it may one day make a real difference in your real life if you can spot them accurately.

So we thought we would illustrate how a sociopath and a narcissist would talk to each other, each describing his own profile. We do know that Charles Manson was sociopathic, we do not know if Kanye is a narcissist but he seems to be accepted as such in the collective unconscious.

An imaginary dialogue between Kanye’s ego and Manson’s soullessness

Kanye West: Yo, what up world? It’s your boy Kanye, the one and only Yeezy, here to drop knowledge bombs about narcissism. The one and only, the undisputed king of all! Today, I’m gonna school y’all on the art of narcissism because, let’s face it, I wrote the book on it! Narcissism ain’t just about loving yourself; it’s worshiping at the altar of your own greatness. And who better than yours truly, Kanye West, the legend, the trendsetter, the icon! Narcissist Vs Sociopath is the wrong question. Narcissism ain’t just being obsessed with yourself. It’s recognizing your own greatness and not being afraid to show it to the world. Confidence and swagger. And let’s be real, ain’t nobody got more swagger than me.

Charles Manson: Swagger, huh? You may have swagger, Kanye, but you’re as deep as a kiddie pool. Sociopathy, now, that’s where the real darkness lies. Manipulating and deceiving those around you with a smile on your face and a knife in your hand. Lying shamelessly, hurting without hesitation, and sleeping well at night. You are enamored with the idea of narcissism, but let me tell you, it’s not all confidence and swagger. It is a lack of empathy for others and an excessive need for admiration. Exploiting those around you for your own gain, without regard for their well-being.

Kanye West: Hold up, Manson, you’re getting it all twisted. Sociopathy may be about manipulation, but it’s also about power. And let’s face it, I’m the most powerful force in the universe! My influence reaches farther than the eye can see, touching the lives of millions around the globe. I’m not just a rapper, I’m a god! You think you know about personality disorders? Please, you couldn’t walk a mile in my Yeezys. Narcissism is about being a visionary, a trailblazer. Being so far ahead of the game that people can’t even comprehend your genius.

Charles Manson: Ah, Kanye, always one to tout your own genius. The god complex. Let me tell you something about popularity or admiration – they’re fleeting. Today’s king is tomorrow’s has-been, and you, my friend, are skating on thin ice. Sociopathy is about power,  control. It’s about pulling the strings from behind the curtain while the puppets dance to your tune. It requires disregard for the rights and feelings of others, a lack of remorse or guilt, and a tendency towards impulsive and irresponsible behavior.

It’s about manipulating and exploiting those around you for your own ends, without any regard for the consequences. It is also why many more of us land in prison (chuckles bitterly), or at the top of the CEO ladder, we are over-represented there, but not as much. Sociopaths we do not weigh up long term consequences, which is why we are so dangerous, we’ll try anything.

Kanye West: Manson, you’re seriously trying to school me on manipulation? Please, I wrote the book on influence. Sociopathy might be about manipulation, but it’s also about power. And let’s face it, I’m the most powerful force in the music industry. My influence reaches far and wide, touching the lives of millions. Please, I control the narrative, I control the spotlight, I control the very fabric of reality itself! You may be a sociopath, but you’ll never be as iconic as me. I’m a living legend, a cultural phenomenon, a walking, talking work of art!

Charles Manson: Your influence may be vast, Kanye, but it pales in comparison to the havoc wreaked by a true sociopath. Sociopathy isn’t just about influence, it’s about destruction. It’s about leaving a trail of chaos and devastation in your wake, all for the sake of your own twisted desires. It’s also the sudden hit, the impulsive decision, unhinged from any morals. It is using or killing someone if you think it works for you, regardless of their moral standing, and not break a sweat at it either.

Kanye West: Twisted desires? Manson, you’re the last person who should be talking about twisted desires. You’re the poster child for depravity and madness. But you know what? I’ll give you this much, you might be a sociopath, but you’ll never be as iconic as me. I’m a legend, a cultural phenomenon. And ain’t nobody gonna take that away from me.

Charles Manson: Perhaps you’re right, Kanye. You may be a legend in your own mind, frankly, it leaves me cold. We sociopaths barely feel emotion, across the board, and in that we are very different. Envy and anger we occasionally feel a bit, or mimic depending on the situation, but that’s often as far as it goes. We do not weigh the consequences, we do not stress very much. We fight calmly, saying horrific things and staying calm. You keep living in your fantasy world where you’re the center of the universe, and I’ll keep doing what I do best—pulling the strings from the shadows and watching the world burn.

6 key tonal differences that help identifying each:

  • Sociopaths tend to have a calmer demeanour and tone
  • Narcissists have a strong tendency for hyperboles “Best in the world” etc.
  • Sociopaths are much more concerned around topics like power and control
  • Narcissists are much more concerned about topics around ego and admiration
  • Sociopaths do not show much emotion during debates or even arguments
  • Narcissists feed off the emotional feedback they get and tend to be more dramatic and to “wax and wane” in the conversation
