Emotional Management

Self-esteem, abuse, harassment, self-image, emotional awareness, self-control.

Emotional management, and related emotion focused therapies include a wide array of psychological phenomena. They are another common reason why clients and patients consult psychotherapeutic and psychiatric professionals.

Emotion focused therapies aim to arm the patient with early awareness of their emotional swings, higher awareness of the triggers to these swings, and a higher set of coping skills.

Emotional management applies to all emotions, and aims to regulate them without stifling them. The term “emotion” must be understood in a wide sense when it comes to emotional management as it includes “emotions” such as rage, impulsiveness, fear, resentment, anxiety, suicidal thoughts etc.

It is also good to note that any healthy person goes through all emotions every now and then. Here again it is worth remembering that depending on context emotions like anger or distrust may well be inevitable and perfectly warranted. What emotional management aims to do however is to arm patients with better tools all along the “chain”. Typically patients first encounter a trigger, then overreact, and show dangerous impulsion, or binge, or “all or nothing” thinking, or crippling anxiety etc. When these kinds of lapses in self-control get too frequent or intense, patients start experiencing loss and damage to their social circle, career, finances, etc. Conversely other patients “integrate” their lack of self-control (and often justify it against all odds) by avoiding places and people. Rather than overreact they do not take the risk of a possibly risky emotional situation in the first place but obviously reduce substantially their personal freedom.
